2004 J/109 Jeopardy — Listing

J/Boats built its name on yachts that sail fast, handle easily with a small crew, and stay comfortable enough to cruise. Designed in a collaborative effort by Rod and Alan Johnstone, the J/109 is the dual-purpose expression of that idea. Under sail she adds up to a stiff, powerful boat that is quick around the buoys, with a proper interior for weekends and longer passages.

JEOPARDY has proven herself on the race course. She was ranked 20th in 48° North's 2012 review of the region's top racing boats, and she took first place at the 2024 PHRF J/Fest in Seattle at Shilshole. Her cushions were kept ashore for racing, so the satin-varnished cherry interior has stayed fresh. A current North Sails inventory keeps her competitive.

She is equally at home on a Wednesday-night race, a run north to the San Juan and Gulf Islands, or a summer of Puget Sound cruising. She is a well-sorted performance cruiser, ready for her next owners.

JEOPARDY is located at Shilshole Bay Marina and available for viewing by appointment.

Accommodations & Interior

Below, JEOPARDY is finished in satin-varnished cherry over a teak cabin sole, the warm interior that sets the J/109 apart from stripped-out racers. Forward is the owner's stateroom with a queen-size berth. Moving aft, the salon opens to the galley and the head with shower. A second sleeping cabin sits in the port quarter. Two staterooms and one head make her an easy boat for a couple or a small family to cruise.

  • Satin-varnished cherry joinery throughout
  • Teak folding salon table
  • Teak cabin sole
  • Cushions kept ashore during racing
  • Diesel forced-air heat

Galley

The galley is set up for real meals underway, not just sandwiches between races.

  • Stainless steel sink
  • Hot fresh water, pressurized
  • 12V refrigeration with freezer
  • Icebox
  • Three-burner propane stove with oven

Cabins

  • Forward queen-size double V-berth
  • Port quarter cabin with double berth

Head

  • Manual marine head
  • 20 gal holding tank with Y-valve
  • Shower

Sails & Rigging

Her sail wardrobe was renewed by North Sails in 2024 and 2025. That is a competitive inventory for the race course that also makes for easy, efficient cruising.

  • North Sails fully battened mainsail, 335 sq ft (2024)
  • North Sails 100% #1 genoa on roller furler (2024)
  • North Sails #2 genoa on roller furler (2024)
  • North Sails Code Zero with top-down furling system (NEW 2025)
  • Keel-stepped mast
  • Rod standing rigging
  • Hydraulic backstay adjuster
  • Boom vang
  • Spinnaker pole

Deck & Steering

The J/109's cockpit works as well for a full race crew as it does for two people out for an afternoon sail.

  • Wheel steering, mechanical
  • Stainless steel anchor roller, never used; removed but included in sale
  • Four winches
  • Lifesling
  • Cockpit cushions
  • Swim ladder
  • Freshwater washdown
  • Transom shower

Mechanical

Her original Yanmar has had a tune-up at every annual haul-out since new, and it was serviced again in August 2026.

  • Yanmar 3GM30F three-cylinder diesel, 27 hp
  • 3,500 engine hours
  • Yanmar saildrive
  • Three-blade folding propeller
  • Fuel burn approximately 0.6–0.8 gph
  • Range approximately 100–150 miles under power

Plumbing & Heating

The diesel heat runs without the engine, which stretches her Northwest season well into fall and winter.

  • Diesel forced-air heating system
  • 70 gal fresh water in two tanks (one rigid plastic, one flexible bladder)
  • Pressure water system
  • Manual marine head with 20 gal holding tank and Y-valve
  • Manual and electric bilge pumps
